Debra Broz creates her ceramic works from kitsch figurines that she finds in second-hand stores. She dissects and reassembles the figurines – adding, subtracting and combining parts to create seamless works that reflect the abnormality of nature, and the fine line between the ordinary and bizarre.
Debra Broz found her love for small and odd things while growing up in rural central Missouri. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with honors from Maryville University – St. Louis in 2003. Debra worked as a mixed media artist and ran an art studio and gallery in Austin from 2007 until 2013, when she took an unexpected journey to Los Angeles. Her artwork has been selected for exhibitions like New Art In Austin: 15 to Watch at Austin Museum of Art and New American Talent 24, among many others. Most recently she was chosen by Oxford American Magazine as one of the “100 New Superstars of Southern Art” and was featured in American Craft Magazine. Visit her website.
